The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular T20 leagues worldwide. Since its first season in 2008, the league’s popularity has been on the rise with each edition. Fans eagerly look forward to the beginning of every IPL season. At the start of each IPL, there’s a lot of excitement about which team will be the most balanced that season. Here, we take a close look at the list of IPL winners from 2008 to 2025.

IPL Winner 2008 – Rajasthan Royals
In the inaugural IPL season in 2008, the Rajasthan Royals emerged as champions in a thrilling final held in Mumbai. Chennai Super Kings finished as runners-up after suffering a three-wicket defeat to the Royals. Yusuf Pathan was named Player of the Final for his impressive 56 runs off 39 balls. Pathan’s innings took the steam out of the CSK attack with three fours and four sixes.
IPL Winner 2009 – Deccan Chargers
The second edition of the IPL took place in 2009 in South Africa. The conditions there were quite different from what is typically seen in India and the Hyderabad-based team took home the trophy. Led by Adam Gilchrist, the Deccan Chargers managed to beat the formidable RCB team in a nail-biting match. Even though Anil Kumble was recognized as the Player of the IPL Final, his efforts were in vain as his team lost. The Chargers clinched the IPL 2009 final by a narrow margin of just six runs.
IPL Winner 2010 – Chennai Super Kings
The third edition of the IPL took place in 2010 in India after a one-year break. Fans eagerly filled the stadiums to see their favorite players compete on the cricket field. After finishing second in the inaugural edition, the Chennai Super Kings surpassed the Mumbai Indians to claim victory in the 2010 IPL. Led by MS Dhoni, CSK won the final in a rather one-sided match. Suresh Raina was named Man of the Match for his important innings for Chennai in the final.
IPL Winner 2011 – Chennai Super Kings
In a historic moment for the IPL, a team has managed to defend their title successfully for the first time. The Chennai Super Kings clinched the IPL trophy for the second consecutive year. Dhoni and his team took down a strong RCB side with a solid performance. The opening pair of Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey laid the groundwork for an easy victory with their huge partnership. Bangalore struggled throughout their chase and ended up losing by 58 runs. Vijay earned the title of Player of the 2011 final for his impressive 95-run innings.
IPL Winner 2012 – Kolkata Knight Riders
In 2012, the IPL saw a new champion as the Kolkata Knight Riders made their debut on the list of IPL winners. Under the bold leadership of Gautam Gambhir, KKR achieved a remarkable comeback against CSK in the final of the 2012 IPL. With a stunning 89 runs off just 48 balls from Manvinder Bisla, KKR successfully chased down a target of 191 with just a couple of balls left. For his outstanding contribution Bisla received the Player of the Match award.
IPL Winner 2013 – Mumbai Indians
The 2013 IPL season was a significant moment in the history of the Mumbai Indians’ journey in the IPL. The team had struggled to secure a win in the first five seasons. But finally, the wait came to an end when Mumbai claimed their first IPL trophy in 2013. Under the leadership of the young Rohit Sharma, MI outperformed CSK in the final match. In a game with few runs scored, Mumbai triumphed by 23 runs marking Chennai’s third defeat in an IPL final. Pollard’s impressive innings of 60 earned him the Man of the Match title.
IPL Winner 2014 – Kolkata Knight Riders
The initial part of IPL 2014 took place in the UAE and then the action moved to India for the second half. The Punjab Kings(previously known as Kings XI Punjab) were the top contenders in the tournament. Led by George Bailey, Punjab made it to the final but encountered a setback in Qualifier 2. Nevertheless, the strong Kolkata Knight Riders team stood firm against Punjab securing the coveted trophy. Manish Pandey’s impressive 94 runs helped KKR claim their second IPL title in just three years.
IPL Winner 2015 – Mumbai Indians
In a re-match of the 2013 IPL final, the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings were facing off once more in another IPL final. But just like before, history repeated itself as CSK struggled to get past the final challenge. The massive score set by Mumbai dashed all of CSK’s hopes of winning their third title. Rohit’s fast fifty was a key factor that helped MI secure their second IPL title in just three years.
IPL Winner 2016 – Sunrisers Hyderabad
In the IPL 2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore faced off in the final. RCB was considered the favorite because of their strong performance leading up to the match. But the unpredictable nature of the tournament was evident in the final. Sunrisers Hyderabad were struggling for most of the game but managed to clinch the IPL 2016 title. Ben Cutting made a significant impact with both bat and ball, earning him the Player of the Match title. SRH triumphed over RCB by just 8 runs.
IPL Winner 2017 – Mumbai Indians
In an exciting finale, the Mumbai Indians secured their third IPL victory in the league’s history. In a nail-biting match against the Rising Pune Supergiant, MI pulled off a 1-run win on the last ball of the game. With this triumph, Mumbai has established itself as the most successful team in IPL history. Krunal Pandya’s important innings of 47 runs earned him the Man of the Match title in the 2017 IPL final.
IPL Winner 2018 – Chennai Super Kings
After being banned for two years, the Chennai Super Kings shocked everyone in the cricket world with their performance in the 2018 IPL season. The ‘Men in Yellow’ secured the second spot on the Points Table achieving nine victories out of 14 games. Dhoni’s team smoothly advanced to the final by defeating SRH in Qualifier 1. They met the Sunrisers once more in the final, where their opener made the chase look easy. Shane Watson delivered a match-winning century, leading CSK to their third IPL title.
IPL Winner 2019 – Mumbai Indians
The 2019 IPL season delivered some of the most exciting moments in the history of the IPL. The final match between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings was truly unique. It came down to the very last ball with Mumbai maintaining their dominance over CSK in the finals. Rohit and his team clinched the victory on the final ball winning by a narrow margin of just 1 run. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded the Man of the Match for his outstanding bowling performance in the final.
IPL Winner 2020 – Mumbai Indians
Due to a delay in organizing the tournament because of the pandemic, the IPL was relocated to the UAE in 2020. On the UAE grounds, IPL saw new finalists in the Delhi Capitals. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Delhi had an almost perfect season but faltered in the Final against the four-time champions, the Mumbai Indians. Trent Boult quickly took down Delhi’s top-order in the final putting the first-time finalists in a tough situation. With a small target ahead Mumbai easily secured a convincing five-wicket victory.
IPL Winner 2021 – Chennai Super Kings
The 2021 season was split into two parts because the second half was delayed due to the pandemic. By the end of the first part, Chennai Super Kings were once again the team everyone wanted to defeat. The narrative carried on as the tournament moved to the UAE. CSK’s players kept dominating and made it to the final without any trouble. Facing a strong KKR team, Chennai displayed their experience and won decisively. Faf du Plessis was awarded the Player of the 2021 IPL final for his exceptional performance.
IPL Winner 2022 – Gujarat Titans
The 2022 IPL final was like a dream come true for the Gujarat Titans. In their very first season, they defeated the Rajasthan Royals to claim the trophy at the massive Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Rajasthan had a tough time and only managed to score 130 runs for 9 wickets which was their lowest score of the season. Gujarat’s captain Hardik Pandya was the standout player as he bowled exceptionally well taking 3 wickets for just 17 runs. Gujarat chased down the target in 18.1 overs and won by 7 wickets with 11 balls to spare.
IPL Winner 2023 – Chennai Super Kings
The 2023 IPL final was full of excitement. Due to rain, the match was shortened to 15 overs for each team. The Gujarat Titans managed to score an impressive 214/4 thanks to Sai Sudharsan’s 96 runs off 47 balls. Chennai Super Kings had to chase a new target of 171 in 15 overs. In the last over, CSK needed 10 runs from the final two balls. Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and then a four off Mohit Sharma clinching the victory with no balls remaining. This win marked CSK’s fifth IPL title tying them with the Mumbai Indians for the most championships.
IPL Winner 2024 – Kolkata Knight Riders
The IPL final in 2024 was pretty one-sided. Sunrisers Hyderabad chose to bat first but collapsed to just 113 runs all out in 18.3 overs. Chasing such a small target, Kolkata Knight Riders made it look super easy. Venkatesh Iyer scored an impressive 52 runs not out off just 26 balls and KKR reached 114/2 in only 10.3 overs. This strong victory gave KKR their third IPL trophy ending a wait of ten years. Starc was awarded Player of the Match while Sunil Narine took home the Player of the Series title.
IPL Winner 2025 – Royal Challengers Bengaluru
The 2025 IPL final was a landmark event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Royal Challengers Bengaluru triumphed over Punjab Kings by a mere 6 runs, securing their first IPL trophy ever. RCB batted first putting up a score of 190/9 in 20 overs. Punjab put up a strong fight in their chase but ended with 184/7, just falling short of victory. The standout player was Krunal Pandya who bowled exceptionally well taking 2 wickets for just 17 runs in 4 overs. His impressive performance kept PBKS under control and earned him the Player of the Match title. As a result, the victory ignited massive celebrations as Virat Kohli finally lifted the IPL trophy after years of disappointment
