In the IPL, the Orange Cap is presented to the player who scores the most runs in the IPL season. This award recognizes the batter who shows great consistency throughout the tournament. In the very first IPL season back in 2008, Shaun Marsh from Punjab took home the Orange Cap for being the top scorer of that season. IPL 2008 – Shaun Marsh (616 Runs)
In the first IPL season in 2008, Shaun Marsh from Punjab was the first player to earn a spot on the IPL Orange Cap Winners list. The left-handed batsman scored 616 runs that season. Marsh was key in helping his team reach the Playoffs. He achieved 5 fifties and 1 century in what became a successful season for the Punjab franchise.
IPL 2009 – Matthew Hayden (572 Runs)
The second edition of the IPL took place in South Africa. On pitches that were bouncy and had seam movement, CSK’s opener Matthew Hayden showcased his best performance. Warner was particularly explosive during the powerplay and delivered several key innings throughout the season for SRH. The left-handed batsman hit seven half-centuries which helped him secure the highest run total of the season.

The 2016 IPL season is unforgettable because of Virat Kohli’s amazing performance throughout the year. He completely dominated the season, scoring most of the runs for RCB. In 2016, Kohli hit four centuries and amassed 973 runs which is the highest ever for a player in a single IPL season. His incredible form led RCB to the finals but a batting collapse crushed his IPL dreams right in front of him. The “Hum-Bull” found itself at the peak of the cliff once more, leading in runs during IPL 2017. Warner played a crucial role in helping SRH maintain their consistency throughout the tournament. He accumulated a total of 641 runs with his highest score being 126 against the Kolkata Knight Riders. SRH triumphed in eight out of their 14 matches before being eliminated by KKR in a rain-shortened game.

With Warner absent, Kane Williamson was given the chance to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. He effortlessly guided SRH to finish first on the points table with nine victories. As a key player in a young batting lineup, Williamson was a source of strength for SRH. He amassed 735 runs at a strike rate exceeding 140. Throughout his time as captain in the IPL, he achieved eight fifties. Although SRH was defeated by a stronger CSK team in the final but another player from SRH still managed to win the Orange Cap.

David Warner made history by being the first player to be included in the IPL Orange Cap Winners list three times throughout his career. After winning in 2015 and 2017, Warner finished as the top run-scorer again in 2019. Coming back after a one-year ban, Warner improved significantly and his desire to score runs was clearly visible in his performances. He amassed 692 runs with an impressive average close to 70 which included eight fifties and one century. Warner’s opening partnership with Jonny Bairstow was definitely the standout feature of the tournament for SRH.

Punjab captain, KL Rahul has been on fire during the last few IPL seasons. Since joining Punjab in 2018, Rahul has let his bat do the talking. Although he didn’t win the Orange Cap in the past two seasons in 2020, he was way ahead of everyone else when it came to the most runs scored in IPL 2020. Leading the team, Rahul was the only bright spot in what was otherwise a disappointing season for the Kings. He finished with 670 runs at an average of 55 which included five fifties and a huge century against RCB.

In 2020, CSK didn’t make it to the IPL playoffs for the first time ever since the league started. But during their last few games that year, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s scored three fifties in a row which got him a spot at the top of the batting order in 2021. Ruturaj’s partnership with Faf du Plessis at the opening was really effective for CSK. This duo, especially Ruturaj helped the team get off to quick starts in most of their matches. Gaikwad finished the season with 635 runs in a campaign that led CSK to victory in the IPL.

Jos Buttler, the opener for Rajasthan Royals was one of the three players kept by the team before the big 2022 IPL auction. This was his second time winning the Orange Cap, arriving eight years after his record-setting 973-run season in 2016.
